Key achievements
Tymax successfully completed a comprehensive value chain analysis under the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) as part of the Kenya Window of the East African Community (EAC) Market Access Upgrade Programme (MARKUP). Funded by the European Union (EU), the program aimed to enhance Kenya’s agro-food sector by improving market access for agricultural products in both EU and regional markets, ultimately driving economic growth and trade competitiveness.
Project Scope: Value Chains Analysis
Tymax conducted an in-depth value chain analysis across 12 counties in Kenya, focusing on export-oriented fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, and nuts. The study provided critical insights into:
✅ Macro Environment Analysis – Examining trade policies, regulations, and frameworks shaping Kenya’s agro-food exports.
✅ Demand Analysis – Assessing market trends, consumer preferences, and international trade dynamics.
✅ Supply Analysis – Evaluating production systems, processing, and barriers to market access.
✅ Value Chain Support & Facilitation – Identifying institutions, service providers, and enablers driving sector growth.
✅ Sub-sector Strategies & Policies – Recommending policy interventions to enhance sector competitiveness.
✅ Gender & Social Analysis – Unpacking gender disparities, challenges, and opportunities for inclusive participation in value chains.
Gender & Nutrition Integration in Agro-Food Value Chains
A key highlight of the project was its emphasis on gender-responsive value chain development. The study revealed gender gaps in production, processing, and trade, providing actionable recommendations to empower women, youth, and marginalized groups within the agro-food sector.
Moreover, nutrition-sensitive approaches were integrated into the analysis, ensuring that improvements in agricultural value chains also contributed to food security, dietary diversity, and overall public health. The findings underscored the need for enhanced market access strategies that not only drive exports but also support nutrition outcomes.

CASCADE(CAtalyzing Strengthened policy aCtion for heAlthy Diets and resiliencE)' is a multi-country project implemented by a consortium led by CARE with GAIN, both organisations with long-standing experience in addressing malnutrition at the community and household levels and advocating for greater government engagement for sustainable food systems.
Tymax’s founder led the CASCADE assignment under GAIN, conducting a high-impact assessment of private service providers (PSPs) supporting nutrition-related policies in Kenya. This work directly strengthened private sector engagement in nutrition programming, ensuring that women and children have greater access to nutritious foods such as fortified foods and school feeding programs, thereby addressing malnutrition at scale. The findings of this work contributed to capacity strengthening of PSPs, reinforcing Tymax’s ability to drive policy-to-practice interventions that improve nutrition outcomes.
Tymax Agribusiness was contracted by SNV Kenya under the HortIMPACT Program, a market-led horticulture initiative funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya. The program sought to enhance food safety, improve smallholder market access, and promote sustainable horticultural value chains. Tymax played a pivotal role in strengthening producer organizations, empowering horticulture enterprises, and enhancing food safety through four key assignments:
1. Client Profiling and Capacity Assessment – Baseline Survey
Geographic Coverage: Makueni, Kiambu, and Nyeri Counties
Tymax conducted a comprehensive baseline survey to assess the capacity and needs of smallholder farmers and producer organizations in integrating into sustainable horticultural markets. The profiling exercise:
✔ Identified gaps in business management, market linkages, and compliance with food safety standards.
✔ Informed targeted interventions to improve access to domestic and export horticulture markets.
✔ Provided a roadmap for capacity building programs to enhance the competitiveness of smallholder horticulture enterprises.
2. Spray Service Providers (SSP) Study – Strengthening Food Safety
Geographic Coverage: Makueni, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Embu Counties
Tymax conducted an in-depth study on Spray Service Providers (SSPs), assessing their role in reducing pesticide misuse and enhancing food safety in horticultural production. The study:
✔ Mapped six SSP business models, evaluating their effectiveness in delivering professional spray services.
✔ Identified challenges limiting smallholder access to professional SSPs, such as lack of equipment and market linkages.
✔ Provided policy recommendations to establish sustainable SSP networks, ensuring compliance with global food safety standards.
This study contributed to unpacking scalable models that enhance food safety, ensuring that consumers have access to nutritious and safe horticultural produce.
3. Producer Organizations & Enterprise Development
Geographic Coverage: Makueni, Nakuru, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Machakos, and Nandi Counties
Tymax worked directly with farmer cooperatives and producer organizations, strengthening their business models, governance, and market readiness. Our interventions:
